Layout overview

The sales floor is 10.00 × 8.00 m (32′ 10″ × 26′ 3″), with two large windows in the front wall either side of the entrance. The checkout counter stands near the entrance, so staff can see who comes and goes.

The shelving uses the library's bookshelf item (0.90 × 0.35 m (2′ 11″ × 1′ 2″)) as a shelving unit: 31 of them in all, including the stockroom.

Sizes and areas are measured to the center lines of the walls, the same way the editor’s area schedule measures them, so each room’s clear floor is slightly smaller.

What makes this layout work

  1. Checkout by the entrance

The counter is just inside the entrance and in view of the door, so staff see who comes and goes.

  2. Aisles between the shelving

Two back-to-back rows in the middle and shelving on the side walls make aisles round the floor: 1.30 m (4′ 3″) between the rows and 2.13 m (7′) to the wall shelving.

  3. A wide stockroom door

The stockroom door is the same width as the front door, for moving stock onto the floor.

  4. Back-of-house together

Stockroom, office and WC sit behind the sales floor, out of view.

Who this template suits

  1. A new shop fit-out

Try shelving layouts before ordering units.

  2. A pop-up or market stall

Shrink the sales floor and keep only what you need.

  3. A showroom

Replace shelving with furniture from the library to plan a display.

Things to consider

  1. Generic shelving units

The units are 0.90 × 0.35 m (2′ 11″ × 1′ 2″) each. Real gondolas and wall bays vary, so type your supplier's sizes before you count bays.

  2. The WC opens onto the sales floor

Its door is in the back wall of the shop. If it is staff-only, move the door so it opens from the stockroom or the office.

  3. One counter

There is one checkout position. Add a second counter if you expect queues at busy times.

  4. 1.30 m (4′ 3″) aisles

Check aisle widths against your fixtures, trolleys and the accessibility rules where you trade before you finalise the plan.

Make it fit your space

  1. Change the aisle widths

Drag the shelving units one at a time to a new position, then measure the aisle with the measure tool (M).

  2. Resize the shelving

Select a shelving unit and type its width and depth to match your fixtures.

  3. Label the departments

Add text with the text tool (T) to name each area of the sales floor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it for a café or a salon?

Yes. Delete the shelving and place tables, chairs, counters or sinks from the library; the rooms, doors and windows stay as they are.
