A plan you can measure from

A 2D floor plan is the top-down view that builders, landlords and furniture shops work from: walls at their real lengths, doors and windows where they are, and each room labelled with its area.

Lengths are stored in millimeters, so the drawing stays exact whichever unit you show. Switch between meters and feet and inches at any point; every length and area updates, and nothing has to be redrawn.

Drawing tools

  1. Typed lengths and angles

While drawing a wall, type 4500, 4.5m, 14'9" or 4500<30 (a length and an angle) and press Enter.

  2. Rooms found automatically

Any space enclosed by walls becomes a room with its own name, area and perimeter.

  3. Dimension lines

Press Shift+D and click two corners. The dimension stays attached and updates when the walls move.

  4. Measure without drawing

The measure tool (M) shows the distance and angle between two points and leaves the plan untouched.

  5. Text labels

Add notes such as "existing radiator" or "new opening" anywhere on the plan.

  6. Layers

Hide, lock or fade walls, structure, furniture, dimensions and annotations separately while you work.

  7. The same plan as a 3D model

Press 3, or open Split view, to see the plan you are drawing with walls at their real height. There is nothing extra to draw.

How to draw a 2D floor plan

  1. Set your units

Choose millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches or feet and inches. The snapping grid starts at 100 mm (about 4 in) and can be changed in Settings.

  2. Draw the outline

Press W and click each outside corner, typing lengths as you go. Double-click or press Esc to finish.

  3. Add interior walls

Start new walls on existing ones; they join and split the space into separate rooms.

  4. Place doors and windows

Click a wall with the door (D) or window (N) tool, then set width, height and sill height in the properties panel.

  5. Dimension and export

Add dimension lines, check the area schedule, and export a PDF, SVG or PNG, or print the plan.

Scaled output

The PDF export prints on A4, A3 or US Letter, portrait or landscape, either fitted to the page or at 1:50, 1:100 or 1:200 with a scale bar. A title block carries the project name, date and units, and you can add a north arrow, a legend and a room schedule. If the plan will not fit at the chosen scale, the dialog tells you before you download.

The SVG export is a vector drawing at 1:100 that opens in browsers and design apps. PNG images can be saved at higher resolution for listings and messages.

Getting the measurements right

Walls are drawn on their centre lines, and room areas are measured to those lines. If you measured a room inside as 3.0 × 4.0 m with 150 mm walls, the centre-line room is 3.15 × 4.15 m: about 13.1 m² rather than 12.0 m². In feet, a 10 × 12 ft room inside 6 in walls becomes 10'6" × 12'6" on centre lines. Add half a wall thickness on each side when you draw, or keep it in mind when you read areas.

Lock the lengths you are sure of. Typed and locked lengths stay exact when you adjust the walls you are less sure of.

Who uses a 2D plan

  1. Quotes from trades

Give a flooring fitter or decorator a plan with room areas in m² or sq ft instead of a hand sketch.

  2. Rental and sale listings

Show the layout of a flat or house so people can judge room sizes before a viewing.

  3. Talking to an architect

Bring a clear measured drawing of what you have and what you want to change.

  4. Coursework

Practise drawing to scale with real dimensions and a printable scaled sheet.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the drawing?

Lengths are stored to the millimeter and shown to the precision of your chosen unit. Typed lengths are applied exactly, and locked lengths are kept when you edit other walls.

Can I draw walls that are not at right angles?

Yes. Angle snapping helps with 15° and 45° steps, and you can type a length with an angle, such as 3000<30, for any direction.

Can I print the plan at a set scale?

Yes. Export a PDF at 1:50, 1:100 or 1:200 on A4, A3 or US Letter. Choose "Fit to page" when the scale does not matter.

Why is the room area larger than I measured?

Areas are measured to wall centre lines, so they include half of each surrounding wall. Measure inside the room for the clear floor area.

Can I add more than one floor?

Yes. Add floors above or below and connect them with stairs. Each floor exports on its own sheet.

Can I open the plan in CAD software?

Yes. Export a DXF, which CAD programs open, or an SVG for vector drawing programs. DWG export is not available.
