Room Planner

Check that the furniture fits before you lift anything. In the room planner, draw the room at its real size, add the doors and windows, and move furniture until the layout works. The 3D view shows how it will feel.

One room, properly sized

Press R and drag to draw a rectangular room; its width and length show as you drag. For exact sizes, draw the walls with W and type each length, or select a wall and type a new length. If you have not measured yet, start from a rough size, for example 12 × 12 ft (about 3.7 × 3.7 m), and correct it once you have your measurements.

Doors and windows come first: they decide where furniture cannot go and where people walk. Then add furniture and resize each piece to the one you own or plan to buy.

Room planning features

  1. Searchable furniture library

Beds, sofas, armchairs, tables, chairs, desks, wardrobes, kitchen units and bathroom fittings, found by name and dragged onto the plan.

  2. Furniture snapping

Drag an item near a wall and it sits flush against it, or tucks into a corner.

  3. Rotate and resize

Turn items in 90° steps or to any angle, and type an exact width, depth and height.

  4. Copy, paste and duplicate

Line up a row of chairs or a set of shelves without placing each one by hand.

  5. Room area and perimeter

Select the room to read its area and perimeter in the properties panel.

  6. Check it in 3D

See furniture heights and the space between items from any angle, or walk in at eye level.

How to plan a room

  1. Draw the room

Drag out a rectangle, or draw the walls corner by corner for an L-shape or an angled wall.

  2. Add doors and windows

Place them on the walls, set their widths, and flip a door's swing if it opens the other way.

  3. Furnish

Search the library and drag items in; resize them to your real furniture.

  4. Check and adjust

Look at the layout in 3D, then move things until there is room to walk and open doors and drawers.

Check the gaps before you move anything

Most layout problems come from the space between pieces of furniture: a wardrobe door that hits the bed, a chair with no room to pull out, or a route from the door to the window that zig-zags around furniture. The right clearances depend on the room and the people using it; the furniture layout tips guide covers common ranges.

The library pieces are generic shapes, not specific products. Type in the measurements of your own furniture for a reliable answer; the default sizes are only a starting point.

Rooms people plan

  1. Bedrooms

Check that a double bed still leaves room for wardrobe doors and bedside tables.

  2. Living rooms

Arrange a sofa, armchair, coffee table and TV stand around a rug.

  3. Kitchens

Place counters, stove and fridge along the walls and keep a clear path between them.

  4. Home offices

Fit a desk and bookshelf into a spare room.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plan a room that is not rectangular?

Yes. Draw the walls corner by corner with the wall tool; any closed shape becomes a room with its area calculated.

Can I use the exact size of my own furniture?

Yes. Select an item and type its width, depth and height in the properties panel.

How is this different from the furniture layout planner?

The furniture layout planner is a quick check that a list of furniture fits a rectangular room. The room planner is the full editor: any room shape, doors, windows, free placement and 3D.

Does the library include specific brands or products?

No. Items are generic, editable shapes. Resize them to match the product you are considering.

Is the room area the floor I can use?

Not exactly. Areas are measured to wall centre lines, so they include half of each wall. Measure inside the room for the usable floor.

Can I plan more than one room?

Yes. Keep drawing; rooms that share walls form a full floor plan.
