Start with what is there

Measure each wall, type the lengths in as you draw, and lock the ones you are sure of so later adjustments leave them alone.

Once the existing layout is on screen, duplicate the project from your projects page and keep the original as the record of how the home is today. Try ideas in the copy.

How to draw a floor plan of your home

  1. Measure

Sketch each room on paper and note every wall length, plus the position and width of each door and window.

  2. Draw room by room

Press W and draw the walls with typed lengths, starting from one corner of the home.

  3. Lock what you measured

Lock confirmed lengths so tidying up the plan does not change them.

  4. Add doors, windows and furniture

Place openings at their measured positions and add the furniture you have, resized to match.

  5. Duplicate and redesign

Make a copy of the project and try your renovation idea in it.

Inside measurements and wall thickness

Walls are drawn on their centre lines, but a tape measure gives you the distance between wall faces. If your walls are about 150 mm (6 in) thick, add half of that on each side: a bedroom measured at 3.0 m (9'10") between the walls is drawn as 3.15 m between centre lines.

The room areas the editor shows are therefore a little larger than the floor you can cover. Use them to compare options, and use your inside measurements when you order flooring or paint.

Tools for an existing home

  1. Typed measurements

Enter lengths exactly as you measured them, in feet and inches or in meters, including fractions such as 9 1/2".

  2. Length locks and pinned corners

Fix the walls you have measured; the rest adjust around them.

  3. Notes on the plan

Label radiators, sockets or a wall you want to remove with text notes.

  4. Furniture you own

Resize library items to the width, depth and height of your own sofa, bed or dining table.

  5. Duplicate and compare

Keep the existing layout and each renovation option as separate projects.

  6. Undo history

Step back through every change in the history panel if an idea does not work out.

Common home projects

  1. Knocking through

See what an open-plan kitchen and dining room would look like with a wall removed.

  2. Moving house

Draw the new place and test where your furniture will go before moving day.

  3. Rearranging a room

Try the bed on another wall or the sofa facing the window without lifting anything.

Frequently asked questions

My measurements do not quite add up. What can I do?

That is normal for an existing building. Lock the walls you trust most, then adjust the remaining ones; the locks keep confirmed lengths fixed.

Do I need a laser measure?

No. A tape measure works; a laser measure is quicker for long rooms. Measure each wall at about waist height and note door and window positions from a corner.

Can I scan my home with my phone?

No. The editor does not scan rooms. You draw the plan from your own measurements, or trace over a photo, scan or PDF of an existing plan that you load as a background and scale.

Should I draw inside measurements or centre lines?

Walls are drawn on centre lines. Add half the wall thickness on each side of an inside measurement, or accept that the plan will be slightly larger than the clear floor.

Can I show a contractor the current layout and the proposal?

Yes. Keep them as two projects and send a PDF of each, or a share link they can open in their own browser.

Is the plan of my home kept private?

Yes. Projects are stored in your browser on your device. They only leave it when you export a file or create a share link.
