Vinyl & SPC Flooring Calculator

Pick sheet vinyl or planks, then enter the room size. For sheet, the vinyl flooring calculator works out how many strips the roll width needs, the length to order with trim and pattern repeat, the seams and how much you buy over the room area. For LVT or SPC planks, it rounds the area with wastage up to whole boxes.

Order 4.30 m (14′ 1″) of the 4.00 m roll: 1 strip along the length, 17.20 m² for a 15.12 m² room.

Before you buy

  • Quantities are estimates. Buy from one batch and keep a few spare pieces for repairs.

Design this room

  • Opens a room whose inside is 3.60 m × 4.20 m.
3.60 m4.20 mStrip 1
How this was calculated
  • Sheet: strips = ⌈(room side across the strips + 2 × trim) ÷ roll width⌉; strip = other side + 2 × trim (rounded up to whole repeats)
  • Sheet: roll length = strips × strip (+ one repeat per extra strip); bought = roll length × roll width
  • Planks: boxes = ⌈area × (1 + wastage) ÷ coverage per box⌉
  1. Room area = 3.60 m × 4.20 m = 15.12 m²
  2. Strips = ⌈(3.60 m + 2 × 50 mm) ÷ 4.00 m⌉ = 1
  3. Strip length = 4.20 m + 2 × 50 mm = 4.30 m
  4. Roll length = 1 × 4.30 m = 4.30 m (14′ 1″)
  5. Area bought = 4.30 m × 4.00 m = 17.20 m²
  6. Over the room area = (17.20 m² − 15.12 m²) ÷ 15.12 m² = 13.8%

How to use it

  1. Pick the product

Sheet vinyl off a roll, or planks and tiles sold in boxes (LVT, SPC).

  2. Measure the room

Width and length inside the walls. For an L-shaped room, work out each rectangle and add them.

  3. Enter the roll or box

For sheet: roll width, trim per edge and any pattern repeat. For planks: the coverage printed on the box.

  4. Read what to order

The length off the roll with strips and seams, or the number of boxes, the area you buy and the cost at your price.

The formula

Sheet: strips = (room side across the strips + 2 × trim) ÷ roll width, rounded up. Each strip is the other side + 2 × trim, rounded up to whole pattern repeats, and each strip after the first adds one repeat to line the pattern up. Roll length = strips × strip length; area bought = roll length × roll width. On Auto the calculator tries both directions and takes the one with less bought, then fewer seams.

Planks: boxes = room area × (1 + wastage) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up.

Worked example

Sheet: a 3.6 × 4.2 m room is 15.12 m². With a 4 m roll and 50 mm trim on each edge, 3.6 + 0.1 = 3.7 m fits the roll, so one strip 4.2 + 0.1 = 4.3 m long covers it with no seams. You order 4.30 m, 17.20 m² of sheet, 13.8% over the room area. Run the other way, the room would need two strips and 29.6 m², so Auto picks along the length. A 500 mm pattern repeat rounds the strip up to 4.50 m (18.00 m²).

In feet: an 11 × 14 ft room with a 12 ft roll and 2 in trim takes one strip of 14′ 4″: 172 sq ft for a 154 sq ft room, 11.7% over.

Planks: 15.12 m² with 10% added is 16.63 m². At 2.2 m² per box that is 8 boxes, 17.60 m². In feet, 154 sq ft with 10% added is 169.4 sq ft: 8 boxes of 23.6 sq ft.

Sheet vinyl or planks

Sheet vinyl comes off a roll of a fixed width and is cut to the room, so what you buy depends on how the strips fit the roll, not only on the area. Planks and tiles, LVT and rigid SPC among them, are sold in boxes, and the box label gives the area one box covers. Pick the product in the first field and the inputs change to match.

Assumptions and limits

Roll width, trim and box coverage are examples: use the figures on your product and from your fitter. Sheet mode counts its own offcut, so it adds no wastage allowance; plank mode adds the 10% example allowance. The room is one rectangle, and the calculator does not plan where seams fall around doorways or fixed units. It holds no prices; enter your own per box or per area.

Frequently asked questions

How much vinyl flooring do I need?

For planks, take the room area, add a wastage allowance and divide by the coverage on the box. A 15.12 m² room with 10% added needs 8 boxes of 2.2 m². For sheet, the roll width decides the length you order.

How do I work out sheet vinyl from a roll?

Add the trim to both edges of the side across the roll and divide by the roll width for the number of strips. Each strip is the other side plus trim. A 3.6 × 4.2 m room on a 4 m roll with 50 mm trim takes one 4.30 m strip.

How are SPC and LVT planks measured?

By area, like other boxed planks. Measure the room, add your wastage allowance and divide by the area one box covers, from the box label. The calculator rounds up to whole boxes.

Why do I buy more sheet than the room area?

The roll comes in one width, you cut a trim allowance at every wall, and a pattern repeat lengthens each strip. In the 3.6 × 4.2 m example the 17.20 m² bought is 13.8% over the 15.12 m² room.

What does the pattern repeat change?

Each strip is cut on whole repeats, and each strip after the first adds one repeat so the pattern lines up at the seam. Enter 0 for a plain sheet.
