Laminate & Wood Flooring Calculator
Enter your rooms and the board size and box count from the label. The laminate flooring calculator adds your wastage allowance, rounds up to whole boards and boxes, works out the rows in the first room and the width of the last row, and counts underlay rolls if you enter their coverage.

Before you buy
- Quantities are estimates. Buy from one batch and keep a few spare pieces for repairs.
Design this room
- Opens a room whose inside is 4.20 m × 3.60 m.
How this was calculated
- Area = Σ width × length (or the total you enter)
- Boards = ⌈area × (1 + wastage) ÷ (board length × board width)⌉; boxes = ⌈boards ÷ boards per box⌉
- By coverage: boxes = ⌈area × (1 + wastage) ÷ coverage per box⌉
- Rows = ⌈(room side across the boards − 2 × gap) ÷ board width⌉; last row = the rest
- Last row narrower than the limit: rip the first row too, both (last row + board width) ÷ 2
- Underlay rolls = ⌈area ÷ roll coverage⌉
- Floor area = 4.20 m × 3.60 m = 15.12 m²
- With wastage = 15.12 m² × (1 + 10%) = 16.63 m²
- Boards = ⌈16.63 m² ÷ (1,380 mm × 193 mm)⌉ = ⌈62.45⌉ = 63
- Boxes = ⌈63 ÷ 8⌉ = 8 (64 boards)
- Width to fill = 3.60 m − 2 × 10 mm = 3,580 mm
- Rows = ⌈3,580 mm ÷ 193 mm⌉ = 19
- Last row = 3,580 mm − 18 × 193 mm = 106 mm
How to use it
Measure the rooms
Width and length inside the walls for each room, or a total area.
Copy the box label
Board length, the visible face width and boards per box. For random lengths, pick coverage per box instead.
Pick the board direction
Which way the boards run in the first room. The rows and the last row are worked out across them.
Read boxes and the last row
Boards and boxes with your wastage allowance, rows, the last row width, underlay rolls and the cost at your price.
The formula
Boards = area × (1 + wastage) ÷ (board length × board width), rounded up; boxes = boards ÷ boards per box, rounded up. With coverage per box: boxes = area × (1 + wastage) ÷ coverage, rounded up.
Rows = (room side across the boards − 2 × expansion gap) ÷ board width, rounded up, and the last row is what is left. If the last row is narrower than your limit, rip the first row too: both become (last row + board width) ÷ 2, with the same number of rows. Underlay rolls = area ÷ roll coverage, rounded up.
Worked example
A 4.2 × 3.6 m room is 15.12 m², 16.63 m² with 10% added. Boards of 1380 × 193 mm give 62.45, so 63 boards, and at 8 per box you buy 8 boxes (64 boards, 17.05 m²). With the boards along the 4.2 m width and a 10 mm gap at each wall, 3,580 mm is left to fill: 19 rows, and a last row of 106 mm, wider than the 50 mm limit.
In feet: a 14 × 12 ft room is 168 sq ft, 184.8 sq ft with 10% added. Boards of 48 × 7.5 in give 73.92, so 74 boards in 10 boxes of 8. Across the boards, 12 ft less two 3/8 in gaps leaves 143 1/4 in: 20 rows with a last row of only 3/4 in. That is under the 2 in limit, so you rip the first row too and cut both to 4 1/8 in.
Underlay at 15 m² per roll: 15.12 ÷ 15 rounds up to 2 rolls.
Wood boards and random lengths
Engineered and solid wood are counted the same way as laminate. Many wood floors come in random lengths, so the box gives the area it covers, not a board count. Pick “Coverage per box” and type that area: 16.63 m² ÷ 2.131 m² per box rounds up to 8 boxes.
Assumptions and limits
The expansion gap (10 mm or 3/8 in) and the narrowest last row (50 mm or 2 in) are examples: your product’s fitting instructions give the real figures. Rows are worked out for the first room only. No wastage is added to underlay. Rooms are rectangles; enter other shapes as several rows. The calculator holds no prices; enter your own per box or per area.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of laminate do I need?
Add a wastage allowance to the floor area, divide by the area of one board and round up, then divide by the boards per box and round up. A 4.2 × 3.6 m room with 1380 × 193 mm boards, 8 to a box, takes 8 boxes with 10% added.
How do I work out the last row width?
Take the expansion gaps off the room side across the boards and divide by the board width. The rows round up and the last row is what is left. In the example, 3,580 mm across 193 mm boards leaves a 106 mm last row.
What if the last row is too narrow?
Rip the first row too, so both rows share the width: (last row + board width) ÷ 2 each. A 3/4 in last row with 7.5 in boards becomes two rows of 4 1/8 in.
How big an expansion gap do I leave?
Your product’s fitting instructions say. The 10 mm or 3/8 in in the calculator is an example; change it in the assumptions.
How much underlay do I need?
Divide the floor area by the area one roll covers and round up. The calculator adds no wastage to underlay, so add a roll if you cut around a lot.
