Flooring Cost Calculator

Enter your floor area and the prices from your quotes. The flooring cost calculator adds the material with a wastage allowance, underlay, adhesive and trims, skirting, labour, removal of the old floor, delivery and tax, line by line, and shows the total and the cost per m² and per sq ft. Every price is yours; the calculator holds no rates.

Buy 16.63 m² of material. Add your prices to see the cost.

How this was calculated
  • Material area = floor area × (1 + wastage); material = material area × price (per box: boxes × box price, boxes = material area ÷ coverage, rounded up)
  • Underlay, removal and labour per area = floor area × rate; skirting = length × rate
  • Subtotal = Σ lines; tax = subtotal × tax %; total = subtotal + tax; per area = total ÷ floor area
  1. Area = 4.20 m × 3.60 m = 15.12 m²
  2. Material area = 15.12 m² × (1 + 10.0%) = 16.63 m²

How it works

  1. Enter the floor

Rooms as width × length, or the total area. The material lines add your wastage allowance on top.

  2. Enter the material price

Per m² or sq ft, per square yard, or per box with the coverage on the box.

  3. Add the other lines

Underlay, adhesive and trims, skirting, labour, removal, delivery and anything else. Leave a line blank to skip it.

  4. Add tax if needed

Enter your rate if your prices leave it out. The total and the cost per m² and sq ft update as you type.

Worked example (prices are illustration only)

A 15.12 m² floor of tile at 25 per m²: with 10% added you buy 16.632 m², which costs 415.80. Add 60 for adhesive, grout and trims, labour at 20 per m² (302.40) and 40 for delivery: the subtotal is 818.20. Tax at 10% adds 81.82, for a total of 900.02, or 59.53 per m² of floor.

In feet, 168 sq ft at 2.50 per sq ft: 184.8 sq ft with 10% added costs 462.00. Labour at 2.00 per sq ft is 336.00; with 60 of sundries and 40 of delivery the subtotal is 898.00. Tax at 8% adds 71.84: a total of 969.84, or 5.77 per sq ft.

What goes into a flooring budget

The material is the line you notice, but a floor also needs what goes under and around it: underlay for laminate, vinyl and carpet, adhesive and grout for tiles, trims at doorways and skirting at the walls. Then labour, taking up the old floor, delivery and tax. List each line from your quotes so nothing is counted twice or left out.

Per area or per box

Tiles, planks and laminate are often priced per m² or sq ft but sold in whole boxes. Pick “Per box” and enter the coverage on the box: the calculator rounds up to whole boxes and prices those, which is what you pay. Carpet in the US is often priced per square yard; pick that option to type the price as quoted.

Labour and removal

Installers price labour per area or as one sum for the job. Pick the way your quote is written. The calculator charges labour and removal on the floor area without the wastage allowance: the installer lays your floor, not the spare tiles. If your quote charges on another area, use a lump sum.

Comparing two quotes

Enter the first quote and use Share to copy a link: the link holds your inputs, nothing is stored. Then enter the second quote and copy its link. Opening each link puts the numbers back, so you can compare the totals and the cost per m² or sq ft line by line.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate flooring cost?

Multiply the floor area with a wastage allowance by the material price, then add underlay, adhesive, labour and other lines, and tax. Divide the total by the floor area for the cost per m² or sq ft.

Should wastage be included in the cost?

Yes for the material: you pay for the extra tiles or planks you buy for cuts and spares. The calculator charges labour and removal on the floor area, without wastage.

How do I compare two flooring quotes?

Enter each quote and copy its share link. Each link restores that quote’s inputs, so you can switch between them and compare each line and the cost per m² or sq ft.

Is labour priced per area or per job?

Both happen. Pick “Per m² or sq ft” or “As one sum for the job” to match how your installer quoted.

Does the cost include tax?

Only if you enter a tax rate. Leave the field blank when your prices already include tax.
