Hectare Calculator

Type a field’s length and width in meters, or a figure in hectares, and the hectare calculator gives the area in hectares, m², ares, km², acres and square feet. Regional land units such as bigha, kanal and katha are built in, region by region, each with the source of its size.

Accuracy
Rounded to 4 decimal places

1 ha ≈ 2.4711 acres.

In other units

  • 10,000 m² (exact)
  • 100 ares (exact)
  • 0.01 km² (exact)
  • ≈ 107,639.1042 sq ft

Conversion factor

  • 1 ha ≈ 2.4710538 acres
  • 1 acre = 0.40468564224 ha (exact)
How this was calculated
  • ha = length (m) × width (m) ÷ 10,000
  • acres = ha ÷ 0.40468564224
  • regional unit = ha × 10,000 ÷ (m² in one unit for the region picked)
  • Result = value × (size of 1 “from” unit) ÷ (size of 1 “to” unit), worked out exactly
  • From length × width: area = length × width
  • Regional units use the size their source states for the region you pick
  1. Acres = 1 ha ÷ 0.40468564224 ha/acre = ≈ 2.4711 acres

How the calculator works it out

  1. The hectare

    A hectare is a square 100 m on each side: 10,000 m², 100 ares, 0.01 km².

  2. Field from its sides

Choose “Length × width” and type the sides in meters (or feet). Hectares = length × width ÷ 10,000.

  3. Hectares to acres

An acre is 0.40468564224 ha exactly, so hectares ÷ 0.40468564224 = acres, and 1 ha ≈ 2.4710538 acres.

  4. Regional units

Pick a regional unit and its region. The calculator divides by that region’s size of the unit, names the source, and lists the result for every region in a table.

How big is a hectare

A hectare is the area of a square 100 m by 100 m: 10,000 m². It splits into 100 ares of 100 m² each, and 100 hectares make a square kilometer. In imperial units it is about 107,639.1 sq ft or 2.4711 acres. A square 330 × 330 ft comes close, at about 1.0117 ha.

Field area from length and width in meters

Multiply the two sides in meters and divide by 10,000. A field 250 × 180 m is 45,000 m², which is 4.5 ha and 450 ares, both exact, or about 11.1197 acres. If the field is not a rectangle, the plot area calculator handles four-sided shapes from their sides and one diagonal.

Hectares to acres

Divide hectares by 0.40468564224 to get acres: 1 ha ≈ 2.4711 acres and 2.5 ha ≈ 6.1776 acres. For lots measured in feet, and for the US survey acre on older US deeds, use the acre calculator.

Worked examples

A field 250 × 180 m is 45,000 m² = 4.5 ha exactly, 450 ares, and 45,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224 ≈ 11.1197 acres.

1 ha = 10,000 m² ≈ 107,639.1 sq ft ≈ 2.4711 acres.

2.5 ha ÷ 0.40468564224 ≈ 6.1776 acres.

Regional units by region, with sources

A hectare is the same size everywhere; a bigha changes from one district to the next. Sizes of regional units differ by state and district and have changed over time; your land record is the authority.

Each regional figure comes from the source named in the calculator: state revenue departments, the Government of India’s Glossary of Revenue Terms, the Punjab Settlement Manual, Nepal’s Survey Department and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Land. Rows backed only by secondary sources such as Wikipedia or property portals are marked unverified and name their source. Where sources disagree on one unit in one region, each figure is listed as its own labelled option rather than one being picked for you. If your record gives a different size, pick “Custom size” and type it in. Some Indian land records give extents in hectares and ares; the calculator lists the are as a unit of its own.

Regional units covered

The table below lists, for every regional unit the calculator knows, the regions it covers and whether an official source backs each one. Built in: aana, ankanam, bigha, biswa, biswansi, cent, chatak, daam, decimal, dhur, dhurki, ganda, ghumaon, ground, guntha, jareeb, kanal, kani, kara, katha, killa, kranta, lessa, marla, murabba, nali, ojutangsho, paisa, ropani, sarsai, til, across India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Units and regions not listed have no source we could cite, so they are left out: for those, and whenever your land record gives a different size, pick “Custom size” and type the size of one unit.

Rates per hectare vs per acre

Seed, fertiliser and yield figures are often given per hectare. To turn a per-hectare figure into a per-acre one, divide by 2.4710538 (or multiply by 0.40468564224): 100 kg/ha ≈ 40.4686 kg/acre. To go from per acre to per hectare, multiply by 2.4710538.

Frequently asked questions

How many square meters are in a hectare?

10,000 m². A hectare is a square 100 m on each side.

How many acres is a hectare?

About 2.4711 acres. An acre is exactly 0.40468564224 ha, so 1 ha ÷ 0.40468564224 ≈ 2.4710538 acres.

How do I calculate hectares from length and width?

Multiply the length by the width in meters and divide by 10,000. A field 250 × 180 m is 45,000 m², which is 4.5 ha.

How many bigha are in a hectare?

It depends on the region, because a bigha has different sizes in different states and countries. Pick bigha and your region in the calculator to see the figure and its source, or enter the size from your land record as a custom unit.

What is an are?

A metric unit of 100 m², a square 10 m on each side. 100 ares make a hectare. Some land records give extents in hectares and ares.
