Square Yard & Gaj Calculator
Type a figure in square yards or gaj, or the length and width of a plot or floor, and the square yard calculator gives the area in sq yd, sq ft, m², acres and hectares. Every factor is exact, so 100 gaj reads 900 sq ft with no rounding. Regional units such as marla, kanal and bigha are built in, each with its source.

Type 1,200 or 5.75; a comma before three digits groups thousands.
- Result
- 900 sq ft
- Accuracy
- Exact
100 sq yd = 900 sq ft exactly.
In other units
- 83.612736 m² (exact)
- 0.0083612736 ha (exact)
- 100 sq yd (exact)
- ≈ 0.0207 acres
Conversion factor
- 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft (exact)
- 1 sq ft ≈ 0.1111111 sq yd
How this was calculated
- sq yd = length × width ÷ 0.83612736 m²
- sq ft = sq yd × 9
- m² = sq yd × 0.83612736
- Result = value × (size of 1 “from” unit) ÷ (size of 1 “to” unit), worked out exactly
- From length × width: area = length × width
- Regional units use the size their source states for the region you pick
- Square feet (sq ft) = 100 sq yd × 9 sq ft/sq yd = 900 sq ft (exact)
How the calculator works it out
One factor
A yard is 0.9144 m by definition, so a square yard is 0.9144 × 0.9144 = 0.83612736 m², and 9 sq ft. Every conversion goes through square meters with these exact factors.
From length and width
Choose “Length × width” and type the two sides in feet, meters or any length unit. The area is length × width, then divided by 0.83612736 m² for square yards.
Exact or rounded
A result that ends within 12 decimals is shown in full and marked exact. Anything else, such as 133⅓ sq yd, is rounded to the decimal places you pick and shown with ≈.
Regional units
Pick marla, kanal, bigha or another regional unit, then its region. The source for that size appears under the result, and a table shows the same figure in every region’s size.
What a square yard is
A square yard is a square one yard (3 feet, 0.9144 m) on each side. That makes it 9 sq ft, 1,296 sq in and 0.83612736 m². Carpet, turf and some flooring are sold by the square yard in the US, and plot sizes in North India and Pakistan are often quoted in square yards under the name gaj.
Gaj calculator: plot sizes in gaj
In plot sizes, 1 gaj means 1 square yard. (As a length, gaj is a yard.) A 100 gaj plot is 900 sq ft, or 83.612736 m², and a 200 gaj plot is 1,800 sq ft, or 167.225472 m². To go from square feet to gaj, divide by 9: a 1,350 sq ft plot is 150 gaj.
The calculator labels the unit “Square yards / gaj”, so a figure in gaj goes in as square yards. If your land record uses a gaj of another size, choose “Custom size” and enter the size the record gives.
Worked examples
A plot 30 × 40 ft is 1,200 sq ft. Divided by 9 that is 133⅓ sq yd, shown as ≈ 133.3333 at four decimals, and 1,200 × 0.09290304 = 111.483648 m² exactly.
100 gaj × 9 = 900 sq ft, and 100 × 0.83612736 = 83.612736 m², both exact.
In meters, a plot 10 × 12 m is 120 m². 120 ÷ 0.83612736 ≈ 143.5188 sq yd.

Where the regional sizes come from
Marla, kanal and bigha are where plot sizes stop being fixed. Sizes of regional units differ by state and district and have changed over time; your land record is the authority.
Each regional figure comes from the source named in the calculator: state revenue departments, the Government of India’s Glossary of Revenue Terms, the Punjab Settlement Manual, Nepal’s Survey Department and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Land. Rows backed only by secondary sources such as Wikipedia or property portals are marked unverified and name their source. Where sources disagree on one unit in one region, each figure is listed as its own labelled option rather than one being picked for you. If your record gives a different size, pick “Custom size” and type it in. A bigha, for example, has more than twenty listed sizes across India, Nepal and Bangladesh; the “Varies by region” table under the result shows your figure in each of them.
Regional units covered
A plot in gaj often also appears in marla, kanal or bigha on a land record. Built in: aana, ankanam, bigha, biswa, biswansi, cent, chatak, daam, decimal, dhur, dhurki, ganda, ghumaon, ground, guntha, jareeb, kanal, kani, kara, katha, killa, kranta, lessa, marla, murabba, nali, ojutangsho, paisa, ropani, sarsai, til, across India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Units and regions not listed have no source we could cite, so they are left out: for those, and whenever your land record gives a different size, pick “Custom size” and type the size of one unit.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square yard?
Nine. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 sq ft. In metric it is 0.83612736 m², exactly.
Is 1 gaj equal to 1 square yard?
In plot sizes, yes: 1 gaj is used for 1 square yard, which is 9 sq ft. As a length, gaj means a yard. If your land record defines it another way, use the size it gives.
How many gaj is a 30 × 40 plot?
A 30 × 40 ft plot is 1,200 sq ft, and 1,200 ÷ 9 = 133⅓ gaj (about 133.33). In square meters it is 111.483648 m².
How do I convert square yards to square meters?
Multiply by 0.83612736. 100 sq yd is 83.612736 m². To go back, divide square meters by 0.83612736: 120 m² is about 143.52 sq yd.
How many gaj are in a marla or a bigha?
It depends on the region. In Haryana’s land-records unit table a marla is 9 sarsai of one 66-inch karam squared, which works out to 272.25 sq ft or 30.25 gaj, and 20 marla make a kanal of 605 gaj. Bigha sizes differ widely; pick your unit and region in the calculator to see the figure and its source.
