Bedroom Size Calculator
Enter your bed, nightstands, wardrobe and desk with the space you want around them. The bedroom size calculator gives the smallest clear bedroom for that arrangement, what sets each side, and a room you can open in the editor.
Bedroom size calculator
Planning aid, not a building-code check. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and building type. Confirm with your local rules or a qualified professional. Some places set a minimum bedroom size; this tool does not check it.
Mattress sizes differ by country and brand; enter yours. Bare numbers are meters; 190 mm works too.

The smallest clear bedroom for this arrangement is 2.80 m (9′ 2″) × 3.50 m (11′ 6″) (9.80 m² (105.5 sq ft)). Width set by: bed, sides. Length set by: bed, foot space, wardrobe. Fits your room with 0.20 m spare across and 0.10 m spare along.
In the editor
- “Design this room” opens a room whose inside is this size, with the editor’s library bed, nightstands, wardrobe and desk placed as shown. Library sizes may differ from yours; resize them there.
How this was calculated
- Each side of the bed = the larger of the nightstand width and the space beside the bed (a side against a wall needs neither).
- Width = bed width + both sides (+ wardrobe depth + extra wardrobe front space for a side-wall wardrobe) (+ desk width); at least the wardrobe width if it is on the foot wall.
- Length = bed length + the larger of foot space and wardrobe front space + wardrobe depth (foot-wall wardrobe), or bed length + foot space; at least the wardrobe width (side wall) and desk depth + chair space.
- A side-wall wardrobe shares the space beside the bed; the extra it needs is front space − space beside the bed, if more. With a nightstand on that side (or a desk), it shares nothing and adds its full front space.
- Sides of the bed = left 0.60 m, right 0.60 m = 1.20 m
- Width = max(0.60 m + 1.60 m + 0.60 m, 1.20 m) = 2.80 m
- Length = 2.00 m + max(0.60 m, 0.90 m) + 0.60 m = 3.50 m
- Area = 2.80 m × 3.50 m = 9.80 m²
How the size is built up
Bed
Its head is on a wall. Enter your mattress or frame size: bed sizes differ by country and brand, so the buttons fill in the editor’s library beds as a starting point.
Sides
Each open side of the bed gets the larger of the nightstand width and the space beside the bed. A side against a wall gets nothing.
Wardrobe
On the foot wall it adds its depth plus the larger of the foot space and its front space. On a side wall it adds its depth and shares the space beside the bed.
Desk
It stands on the head wall beside the bed, adding its width; the room must also be long enough for the desk and its chair.
Worked example
A 1600 × 2000 mm bed with 450 mm nightstands on both sides, 600 mm beside it and at the foot, and a 1200 × 600 mm wardrobe on the foot wall needing 900 mm in front. Width: 1600 + 600 + 600 = 2800 mm (the 600 mm side space is wider than the nightstands). Length: 2000 + 900 + 600 = 3500 mm (the wardrobe’s front space is more than the foot space). The clear room is 2.8 × 3.5 m = 9.8 m², about 105.5 sq ft.
The same arrangement in inches, with a 60 × 80 in bed, 18 in nightstands, 24 in of side space and a 24 in deep wardrobe needing 36 in in front: 60 + 24 + 24 = 108 in wide and 80 + 36 + 24 = 140 in long, which is 9′ × 11′ 8″, or 105 sq ft.
Bed against a wall or in the middle
Pushing one long side of the bed against a wall saves a whole side zone, which can decide whether a small room works. The cost: you get in from one side and the bed is harder to make. Choose “One long side against a wall” to see the saving; the nightstand then goes on the open side.
Check the room you have
Type your room’s inside width and length. The arrangement is tried both ways round and you see the spare space, or how much more width and length it needs. The result is the clear floor between wall faces; it does not include space for a door swinging into the room, so check where the door opens before you settle on a layout. For layout ideas, see the bedroom plans page.
Frequently asked questions
What size room do I need for a double or queen bed?
Bed width plus the space on each side, by bed length plus the space at the foot. With a 1600 × 2000 mm bed and the example 600 mm all round, that is 2.8 × 2.6 m before any wardrobe; a 60 × 80 in queen with 24 in all round needs 9′ × 8′ 8″. Your own clearances change the answer.
What size room do I need for a king bed?
Use the same sum with your king’s size, since king sizes differ by country. For example, a 76 × 80 in bed with 24 in on both sides and at the foot needs 124 × 104 in, which is 10′ 4″ × 8′ 8″, before storage.
How much space should there be beside a bed?
Enough to get in and walk past, and at least the width of a nightstand if you have one. The calculator starts from 600 mm (24 in) as an example; change it to what suits you.
Can a bed go against a wall?
Yes. Choose “One long side against a wall” and the side zone on that side is dropped, which narrows the room by that amount.
Does the door swing count?
Not in this calculator. A door that opens into the room needs its own floor space; keep it clear of the bed and wardrobe zones when you place furniture in the editor.
