Living Room Size Calculator

Enter your sofa, armchairs, coffee table and TV unit, the gaps between them and where people walk past. The living room size calculator gives the smallest clear room for that layout and the distance from the sofa to the TV unit.

Fits

The seating, table and TV unit need a clear room of 3.30 m (10′ 10″) × 3.30 m (10′ 10″) (10.89 m² (117.2 sq ft)). Width set by: the seating row and walkway. The front of the sofa is 1.95 m (6′ 5″) from the front of the TV unit. Fits your room with 0.30 m spare across and 0.70 m spare along.

How this was calculated
  • Length = seating depth + sofa-to-table gap + table depth + table-to-TV gap + TV unit depth; a missing table or TV unit drops its terms. Seating depth is the deeper of the sofa and the armchairs.
  • Seating row = sofa width + armchairs × (armchair width + gap between sofa and armchair).
  • Width = the larger of: seating row + walkway + end gap (no walkway: an end gap at each end), and TV unit width + 2 × end gap.
  • Distance = sofa-to-table gap + table depth + table-to-TV gap: front of the sofa to the front of the TV unit.
  1. Length = 0.90 m + 0.45 m + 0.60 m + 0.90 m + 0.45 m = 3.30 m
  2. Seating row = 2.10 m = 2.10 m
  3. Width = max(2.10 m + 0.90 m + 0.30 m, 1.60 m + 2 × 0.30 m) = 3.30 m
  4. Area = 3.30 m × 3.30 m = 10.89 m²
  5. Sofa to TV unit = 0.45 m + 0.60 m + 0.90 m = 1.95 m
Design this room

How the room is built from the seating

  1. Front to back

Sofa depth + gap to the coffee table + table depth + gap to the TV unit + TV unit depth. With no table, the sofa faces the TV unit across one gap.

  2. Side to side

The sofa and any armchairs in a row, then a walkway on one side and a gap at the other end. With no walkway, there is a gap at each end.

  3. The wider of two

The TV unit also needs its width plus a gap at each end; the room is as wide as the larger of the seating row and the TV unit.

  4. Your room

Enter your room’s inside size to see whether the layout fits and what is spare.

Worked example

A 2100 × 900 mm sofa, a 1100 × 600 mm coffee table 450 mm in front of it, a 1600 × 450 mm TV unit 900 mm beyond the table, a 900 mm walkway and a 300 mm end gap. Length: 900 + 450 + 600 + 900 + 450 = 3300 mm. Width: 2100 + 900 + 300 = 3300 mm, wider than the TV unit’s 1600 + 2 × 300 = 2200 mm. The clear room is 3.3 × 3.3 m = 10.89 m², about 117.2 sq ft, and the front of the sofa is 1.95 m from the front of the TV unit.

In inches, an 84 × 36 in sofa, a 24 in deep table with 18 in and 36 in gaps, an 18 in deep TV unit, a 36 in walkway and a 12 in end gap give 132 × 132 in: 11 × 11 ft, or 121 sq ft.

Walkways through or around the seating

A walkway that runs between the sofa and the TV cuts across whoever is watching, so this layout puts the walkway along one side of the seating group instead. If the room is a through-route with doors at both ends, choose the side that joins them. If nobody walks through, choose “None” and the room only needs a gap at each end of the seating.

About the sofa-to-TV distance

The calculator reports the distance from the front of the sofa to the front of the TV unit because it falls out of the layout. How far you sit from a screen depends on its size, its resolution and what you find comfortable, so the page gives your distance and sets no target. Change the two gaps if you want to sit closer or further away.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a living room be for a sofa and armchairs?

Add the armchairs to the sofa row with a gap between each, then a walkway and an end gap. With the example values, a 2100 mm sofa and one 850 mm armchair need 2100 + 850 + 150 + 900 + 300 = 4300 mm of width.

How far should the sofa be from the TV?

It depends on the screen and on you. The calculator shows the distance your layout gives (1.95 m from sofa front to TV unit front in the example), so you can compare it with what you find comfortable.

How much space should there be between a sofa and a coffee table?

Enough for legs and to reach the table. The calculator starts from 450 mm (18 in) as an example value; change it in the assumptions.

Where should the walkway go?

Along one side of the seating, joining the doors people use, so nobody walks between the sofa and the TV. Pick left, right or none in the calculator.

Can I use this for an open-plan room?

Yes, for the living part: the result is the clear area the seating group needs. Plan the kitchen and dining parts separately and leave a walkway between the zones.
