Feet to Inches Converter
Type a length and pick the units: this feet to inches converter multiplies by 12, divides by 12 for the reverse, and turns decimal feet into feet, inches and a fraction you can find on a tape measure. Each result says whether it is exact or rounded, and lists the same length in meters, centimeters and millimeters.

How to convert feet to inches
Feet to inches
A foot is 12 inches by definition, so inches = feet × 12. 5.75 ft × 12 = 69 in.
Inches to feet
Divide by 12: 75 in ÷ 12 = 6.25 ft. A result like 1 ÷ 12 never ends in decimals, so the converter rounds it and marks it with ≈.
Inches to feet and inches
Whole feet are the inches divided by 12, rounded down; the inches left over are the remainder. 75 in is 6 ft (72 in) and 3 in: 6′ 3″.
Fractions of an inch
The leftover inches are rounded to the fraction you pick, 1/16 in by default. If they round up to 12″, that carries into one more foot.
Worked examples
5.75 ft × 12 = 69 in, exact. In metric that is 1.7526 m, also exact, because an inch is 25.4 mm by definition.
75 in ÷ 12 = 6.25 ft, which is 6′ 3″ and 1.905 m.
6.27 ft × 12 = 75.24 in. Take off 72 in for 6 ft and 3.24 in are left. To the nearest 1/16 in, 3.24 in is 3¼ in (3.25), so 6.27 ft ≈ 6′ 3¼″. The length itself is 1.911096 m exactly; only the fraction is rounded.
Decimal feet and feet and inches
Plans, spreadsheets and laser measures often give decimal feet, while tapes and lumber use feet and inches. The two look alike and are easy to confuse: 6.5 ft is six and a half feet, which is 6′ 6″, not 6′ 5″. The part after the point is a share of a foot, so multiply it by 12 to get inches: 0.5 × 12 = 6.
Pick “Feet and inches” as the “To” unit to see any decimal length in that form, or as the “From” unit to type feet and inches in separate boxes.
Fractions of an inch on a tape measure
Imperial tapes mark each inch in halves, quarters, eighths and often sixteenths. Between two inch marks, the half-inch mark is the longest and the sixteenths are the shortest. Choose 1/16 in to match a tape marked in sixteenths, a coarser fraction to match yours, or 1/32 in and 1/64 in for finer work. The converter writes common fractions as ½, ¼, ¾ and the eighths, and others as 13/16.
